Tire Inspections Between Sessions

8/25/2013

Tire inspections between sessions should be used to remove all rubber pickup from the wheels and tire treads, as well as offer an opportunity to examine the tires for punctures or cuts that might lead to compound tearing or air pressure loss. The inspection should also confirm if each tire's tread compound splice (that runs perpendicular to the direction of travel across the tread area) has become visible....More

Car owners prefer independent shops

8/15/2013

A common misconception is that you have to take your car to a dealer for maintenance and repair work to keep its warranty valid. In fact, not only can you take your car to an independent mechanic, but most car owners say they prefer those shops for repairs, often because they're less expensive.

Picking parts to pass inspection!

Did you ever get a rejection sticker on your car's inspection?  Keeping your car safe can be expensive.

I have an older car, 2000 Acura with 180,000 miles on her.  The car has been paid off for years and I certainly don’t miss making monthly payments.  So the other day I’m getting my oil changed and the mechanic mentions that my car won’t pass inspection because of a bad tire.  Not to mention my car mirror got knocked off by some hit and run jack wagon.

Now I gotta get the tire fixed and a new side mirror. $145 for the tire installed and balanced and $125 for the mirror.  $270 bucks to pass the inspection!  I’m all for driving safe a safe car but $270 is a lot of money.

My frugal brother heard about my car inspection situation and suggests visiting a Junk Yard.  So I did , and to my surprise I was able to acquire a used tire and side mirror assembly for $90.  The best part of my story is that I was able to find a mirror with the exact same color as my car!  SCORE!
