Below are the key details about the inspection process:

Inspection Timeline

  • All motorcycles must be inspected annually, with a deadline of June 1 for inspections to be completed each spring.
  • Newly purchased motorcycles must undergo inspection within seven days of registration.

Motorcycle Inspection Cost

  • The fee for motorcycle inspections is $15 in Massachusetts.

Inspection Locations

  • Motorcycle inspections must be conducted at licensed Class M inspection stations throughout Massachusetts. These stations are certified to perform motorcycle inspections according to state regulations.

Inspection Process

Motorcycles are assessed for both safety and emissions compliance. Key components evaluated during the inspection include:
  • Safety Features: VIN number, registration, license plates, brakes, tires, mirrors, horn, lights (headlights, turn signals, brake lights), handlebars, frame condition, footrests, and seating.
  • Mechanical Systems: Fuel system, engine performance, battery condition, exhaust system (including excessive noise checks), swingarm, shocks, chain/sprockets/guard.
  • Additional Features: Windshield/cowling (if applicable), luggage racks, safety bars, and sidecars (if present).

Inspection Outcomes

  • Motorcycles that pass the inspection receive a sticker valid for one year from the inspection date.
  • Motorcycles that fail the inspection will not receive a sticker and cannot be legally operated until the issues are resolved.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Operating a motorcycle without a valid inspection sticker is considered a moving violation and can result in fines and increased insurance premiums.

Emissions Testing

Motorcycles equipped with onboard diagnostic systems older than 15 years must also pass annual emissions tests as part of the inspection process.

By adhering to these requirements, motorcyclists in Massachusetts ensure their vehicles are safe for operation while complying with state regulations designed to protect public safety and reduce environmental impact.
